Hand hewing is a traditional method of shaping round logs into square beams using an axe. The result is a mantel with a distinctive, irregular texture that cannot be replicated by machines. These beams were the backbone of barns, houses, grange halls, and army buildings built in an era when timber-frame joinery held structures together with mortise-and-tenon connections and wooden pegs instead of nails. Hand hewn beams are not smooth, symmetrical, or uniform. That is the entire point. Your mantel will include original axe marks, the defining visual feature of every hand hewn beam. It will almost certainly include checking, a natural characteristic similar to cracking that develops over centuries of aging and is not structural damage.
